Kent County Boys Varsity Basketball Season Preview

The Kent County Trojans Boys Varsity Basketball team kicked off their 2019-20 season with a 69-50 victory over Mardela High School Thursday, December 5th.

The reigning Bayside North Player of the Year Jayshaun Freeman led the Trojans in scoring with 20 points, including 9 in the first quarter. Ten players scored for Kent, as coach Scott Sobaye was able to use the entire bench due to the comfortable lead. Some other top scorers included seniors Cory Wilson with 9 and Tykee Bryant with 7.

The 2019-20 Varsity roster features only three returning players from the previous year; seniors Freeman, Peyton Taylor and Ryan Argo. There are four new players that have moved up from the Junior Varsity team last season; juniors Brayden Mitchell, Tylante Wilson, and Gary Emory, and sophomore Jay Reid. The team also features two transfers, Kayleb Collins from Crisfield and Michael Clark from North Caroline, as well as five that were not on the team last season; seniors Tykee Bryant, Cory Wilson, Logan Cannon, Kenny Fowler, and sophomore Tylir Cunningham.

Kent’s recent games have been a completely different story, losing big to Queen Anne’s 64-26 on December 10th and then again December 12th to North Caroline 47-24. The Trojan’s were without Freeman for most of the Queen Anne’s game and all of the North Caroline game, as he is recovering from a torn ligament in his toe he originally suffered but played through in the season opening win over Mardela. He plans to be sidelined for at least another week.

Junior Brayden Mitchell suffered an injury in December 10th’s border rivalry game as well, this one an MCL injury. Mitchell traveled to Anne Arundel Medical Center that night, and he will be reevaulated in two weeks.

Kent County’s challenge of finding someone to step up in Freeman’s absence will continue next week, as the Trojan’s travel to St. Michaels this Tuesday, December 17th, and then host Colonel Richardson Thursday, December 19th.
