On Wednesday, Oct. 30, the Kent County High School Field Hockey team won the 1A East Regional Championship. They defeated the Saints of Saint Michaels High School with a score of 3-2 at the end of regulation play.

Kent County entered the postseason as the No. 3 seed in the 1A East region with a record of 4-8. They defeated the Eagles of Bohemia Manor High School with a score of 8-0 which brought them to the regional final.

Saint Michaels headed into the postseason as the lowest seed in the region with a record of 2-9. They defeated the No. 1 seed Elkton High School in the regional semi-final with a score of 2-1.

At the end of the first half between KCHS and Saint Michaels, the game was scoreless. After a ten minute halftime, both teams came out eager to score. Saint Michael’s Haley Sadler broke the scoreless tie with a goal from a penalty corner. She went on to score Saint Michael’s second goal as well, in the same fashion.

The first goal for Kent County came from sophomore Kendell Ford. Ford led the Trojans this season in scoring with 13 goals and six assists. The second goal closely followed behind by junior captain Kate Ervin. Ervin has maintained her team captain title for the past two years and earned the coach’s sportsmanship award her sophomore year.

The final goal, that proved to be the game winner, was scored by senior captain Ally Hickman. Hickman scored her goal off from a penalty corner with only 13 minutes left on the clock.

Having made it to the regional final for the past 3 consecutive years, the Trojans were able to bring home the 2019 regional crown. The last time Kent County won the regional championship was 2013 with Head Coach Tammy Goodman.

Junior defender Katie Wade claimed she had never felt more motivated to win a game until the Trojans scored. “I knew once we scored our first goal, anything was possible. We all knew in our hearts this game was ours to win. Going into that game, I knew our team would come out on top.”

Emotions ran high during the game as the Trojans and Saints have had a competitive past. Last season Kent County lost to Saint Michaels during the regular season in overtime with a score of 2-1. This year, in the regular season, the Trojans beat the Saints in a close game, ending with a score of 3-1.

The build-up to this regional game was monumental, as any team could have come out on top.

“My emotions have never been higher, it honestly could have been anyone’s game. But at the end of it all, I felt we truly deserved the win,” said junior defender Annie Brocker.
