Kent County Varsity Football at Kent Island Game Recap

Updated: Sep 30, 2019

The Trojans line up on offense ready to execute a play.

The Kent County High School Varsity Football team lost Friday, September 20 at Kent Island High School 44-7.

After a promising 1-0 start to the season following a 55-16 win in Exmore, Virginia at Broadwater Academy, the Trojans now fall to a record of 1-2, losing two games in a row including a 43-26 loss at James M. Bennett High School on Saturday, September 14.

The defense being unable to stop big plays as well as the offensive line missing their blocking assignments seemed to be among the main factors leading to the loss. Josh Medford, a senior, captain, and starting offensive and defensive lineman said, “Our defense couldn’t get any stops early on in the game, and they (Kent Island) kept scoring each time they had the ball in the first half.”

Kolby Walters, a fellow senior and captain attributed the loss to, “The little things. We were missing our assignments on both sides of the ball.”

Looking ahead to next week, Medford and Walters said what they thought the team can work on to improve to 2-2. “Everyone getting the right blocking assignments on offense so we can start driving more down the field. We also need to work on not having as many unnecessary penalties and getting moved back too far on offense,” Medford said.

Walters thought more outside the box, focusing on the off field, more mental side of the game. “We need to learn how to take and accept our mistakes, move forward, and be accountable and not blame other people,” Walters said.

Kent County will take on Snow Hill High School this Friday, September 27, in what will be the Trojan’s home opener. The Eagles will also come into the showdown at 1-2, with a win Week 1 38-6 at Chincoteague High School, followed by back to back losses at Colonel Richardson High School and home against Arcadia High School.
