Playoffs At KCHS

Updated: Nov 13, 2019

Kent County High School 2019 fall sports season is coming to an end.

According to senior Brendan McColigan, the boys soccer season “wasn't as good as I thought it would have been. I definitely wish we would have won more games, but we put in hard work knowing that we're going to battle hard in playoffs.”

On Oct. 26, the boys soccer team will be playing Colonel Richardson for round one of playoffs. McColigan said, “Last time we played Colonel Richardson, we won 2-0. The team is expecting it to be a good game. We are hoping to win by at least three goals at our home field.”

Reflecting on the entire season, McColigan said, “I think that as the season went on, we learned to work better together and I'm confident that the younger guys that we brought up will bring the talent we need to beat Colonel Richardson.”

In other fall sports, field hockey senior captain Catherine Milligan adds to her experience on the team. She said, “This season was definitely different from the years before. We started off rough and it was hard for us to blend. As the season progressed the team started to get along and work together better.”

Milligan said that, “In the beginning of the season we started out really strong. We hit a rut mid season, but as the season ends I think we are going to finish really strong... which usually happens every year. I think we have a really good shot at winning regionals."

If the team pulls off a win, it will be the first field hockey regional championship since 2013.

The KCHS field hockey team plays Bohemia Manor for their first playoff game, a team they previously scrimmaged and beat 22-0. The game will be hosted at Bohemia Manor, which is completely turf. Milligan said, “Our players are really experienced playing on turf fields, so we are all very excited and have a lot of confidence. Even though we have had a successful history against BoManor, we're still going to play to our best ability and not take them for granted.”

The football team has also made it to playoffs this year. Taylor Lyons, a senior on the varsity football team said, “The team worked really well together facing challenges throughout the season from tough losses. Some teammates drew us apart, but everyone found a way to get back together and move on from any obstacle.”

Being on an athletic team requires full effort from everyone. Lyons said, “as a team, KCHS did pretty good at moving on from mistakes and injuries. We were able to put it behind us and play together in tough game situations.”

To sum up this season and head into the last two regular-season games against Washington and Parkside Lyons said, “we are hoping to beat Washington because they barley beat Snow Hill, and we beat Snow Hill 42-0, but on the other hand playing Parkside will be the opposite. They are a very tough opponent and it will be a challenging game.”

The 2019 fall sports teams have had an extremely successful season. Through hardships and obstacles, every team was able to stick together and play to their best ability.
