Tyson Johnson Returns to Kent, and Delivers Again.

On Mar. 2 2020, St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s baseball team faced off against the Washington College Shoremen for the second time of the season. The first matchup was the season opener held at St. Mary’s in which the Seahawks secured a 9-8 win. The second matchup was held in Chestertown Maryland at Washington College, where the Seahawks secured a second straight win against the Shoremen with a score of 6-3.

On the mound as starting pitcher for the St. Mary’s Seahawks was Kent County’s very own Tyson Johnson. Tyson played at Kent County High School on the varsity baseball team for all four years he attended the school. While at Kent Tyson finished with a career batting average of .341; for those who may not know how good this is, the average batting average for division one baseball is .270 and is .252 for Major League Baseball. Tyson finished high school with 45 RBI’s, six home runs, and also had an even .500 record as a starting pitcher with a total of 144 strikeouts. With such an impressive career, Tyson Johnson will always be praised in/at Kent for his amazing talent, and everyone who got to watch him play will remember #42 forever.

Washington College Shoremen led the Seahawks 3-1 until the seventh inning where St. Mary’s tied the game up 3-3 and ultimately took a 6-3 lead in the eighth inning and closed the game out for a win. With this win early on in the season the Seahawks improved their record to 4-2 while the Shoremen fell to 2-2. For St. Mary’s, Tyson Johnson debuted in his first start on the mound this season. Tyson pitched a strong seven innings; in these seven innings Tyson had only allowed 5 hits and struck out 4 batters before coming out of the game. He had only allowed one earned run throughout the stretch of the game. The Seahawks spoiled the Shoremen’s home opener after Washington College’s relief pitcher gave up five runs in 1 and ⅓ innings.

As a current Kent County High student that went to school with Tyson and got to practice with him for two years, it is very exciting to see him accomplishing what he is now. When he was a player here, everyone looked up to him and knew he was going to go places. Now he has and is making a big impact for his new team at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. I hope Tyson continues to have a successful career along with making his hometown proud.
