NFL Week 5 Recap

By : Shania Wolfe

It’s week five of the NFL season. Teams around the league are looking to secure wins at home, and on the road.

In the AFC, the Kansas City Chiefs are hoping to continue their win streak, while the Baltimore Ravens are hoping to break their two-game losing streak.

Heading over to the NFC, the Dallas Cowboys are looking to rid themselves of their two-game losing streak, while the New Orleans Saints are praying to keep their winning streak going.

AFC:

In the AFC West, the Kansas City Chiefs battled the Indianapolis Colts at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Oct. 6.

The Colts were dominant on both sides of the ball; on the offensive side, running back Marlon Mack had an explosive game, running for 132 yards, and kicker Adam Vinatieri was 4 for 4 with field goals.

The defense held quarterback Patrick Mahomes to 321 yards and a touchdown, and held Chiefs running back Damien Williams to 36 yards.

According to CBS Sports, the Colts allowed points on the Chiefs’ first two possessions, before completely shutting them out.

According to FOX Sports, the Colts played keep-away, running Marlon Mack down Kansas City’s defense. The Colts had 37 minutes of ball possession. In the fourth quarter, the Colts added two more field goals to make it a two possession game.

By the time, the Chiefs got anything moving, it was too late. Indianapolis recovered an onside kick without any issues and then ran out the clock making the final score 19-13. The Colts are heading home to celebrate a big win heading into their bye week.

Ahh yes, the AFC North, the Baltimore Ravens took on their division rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers. These long time rivals battled it out at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh on Oct. 6.

According to the Baltimore Sun, the Ravens had to overcome a shaky game from quarterback Lamar Jackson and their offense to end their two-game losing streak. Jackson was 19 for 28 for 161 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. Yikes.

Running back Mark Ingram ll was limited to 44 yards on 19 carries, and wide receiver Willie Snead IV had four catches for 51 yards; while tight end Mark Andrews had five receptions for 45 yards.

According to the Baltimore Sun, the game changed midway through the third quarter when Ravens safety Earl Thomas lll made contact with Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph’s head which left him unconscious and later concussed.

The game went into overtime, and according to Baltimore Beatdown, Pittsburgh won the coin toss. The Ravens went three and out giving the Steelers a chance to win the game with just a field goal, however, Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey punched the ball free from Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Shuster. Humphrey recovered the fumble, and put the Ravens within field goal range for kicker Justin Tucker.

Tucker kicked the game-winning field goal from 46 yards out, making the final score, 26-23.

NFC:

In the NFC East, the Dallas Cowboys took on the Green Bay Packers. The two teams are long time rivals, and duked it out at AT&T Stadium on Oct. 6.

According to the Dallas Cowboys website, Dallas once again fell victim to Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the quarterback having never lost at AT&T Stadium. Rodgers finished with 238 yards on 22 of 34 passing with no touchdowns, however, he was able to keep his team moving and the Cowboys guessing.

Packers Running back Aaron Jones led the vistor’s effort with 107 rushing yards and a career-high four touchdowns with the Packers as a group running for 120 yards.

Even though the Cowboys offense outgained Green Bay in total offense, 563 yards and rushed for 122; the interceptions and drive-killing penalties kept them off the board despite a strong outing from Amari Cooper, along with the defense missing tackles and allowing Jones to have a career day.

The Packers ran down the time clock, giving Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott only 2 minutes to try and make plays, but ultimately, the Packers defense shut them out and shut the door on a Cowboys victory leaving the final score to be 34-24.

Heading to the NFC South, the New Orleans Saints took on fellow NFC South rival, Tampa Bay at Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Oct. 6. The Saints are coming off a big win in Dallas, while the Buccaneers are coming off with a win over the Los Angeles Rams.

Saints quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, starting his third game in place of the injured Drew Brees was 33 for 314 yards with four touchdown passes. According to the New Orleans Saints website, wide receiver Michael Thomas was Bridgewater’s favorite target as he caught 11 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns.

According to BucsNation, the Saints drove down the field and killed the clock, getting it below two minutes before turning the ball over on downs. With 1:10 left, the Buccaneers moved the ball down the field and scored a touchdown, but it was a little too late as the touchdown made the score, 31-24 with just 13 seconds to go.

Buccaneers kicker Bradley Pinion ensuing onside kick went out of bounds to put the game away, leaving the Saints to walk away with a 31-24 victory over the Buccaneers.
