Defense Dominates, Records Break, Philly Triumphs

On Oct. 6, the Philadelphia Eagles proved who the real “Gang Green” defense was by dominating the New York Jets on Sunday. The final score was 31-6. The teams played at Lincoln Financial Field at 1 p.m.

The Eagles tallied up two interceptions, 10 sacks, two forced fumbles with one recovered, and scored two touchdowns. The Eagles became the first team in NFL history to record 10 sacks and score two defensive touchdowns in a single game.

According to EJ Smith from The Philadelphia Inquirer, “The interesting thing about Sunday’s game was the Eagles offense actually struggled to get going. The Jets run defense has been respectable this season, and they continued to keep the Carson Wentz and Co. from getting into a rhythm.”

This statement is true; Carson Wentz threw for only 189 yards with one passing touchdown and Jordan Howard finished with 62 rushing yards and a touchdown as well.

Going into this game, most NFL fans could have probably predicted the outcome. With the Jets only having 179.5 team yards per game, this ranks them last in the NFL for this category. The Jets are also second to last in points per game, with only averaging 9.8 weekly.

Why is this so important for the Eagles? With Philadelphia winning this previous week and the Dallas Cowboys falling to the Green Bay Packers, this places the Eagles in first place in the NFC East division.

Even though Philadelphia and Dallas hold the same record of (3-2), the Eagles outrank the Cowboys because of their 34-27 win over the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 26. While being in the same division, how teams do against common opponents effects where they place in their rankings. Dallas lost to the Packers 34-24 which leaves them in second place in the NFC East.

The Eagles have a tough schedule coming up, all six of their next opponents have a top 15 ranked defense in the league so it’s going to be a true test for Carson Wentz and the offense. If the Eagles can manage to stay on top of the NFC East after these games, teams should fear Philadelphia heading into the playoffs.
