Eyes on the Heisman Prize

The NCAA has recently started cracking down on violations of their rules, and many big name college athletes are paying the price for it including 2019 star Chase Young.

Chase Young is an American football defensive end for Ohio State. He is one of the nation’s top defensive players and was on pace to be the first defensive player to win the Heisman Trophy in two decades. His odds of winning the Heisman Trophy were an exceptional 8/1 until recently those odds were dealt a fatal blow.

It was announced on Nov. 8 that Chase Young is being suspended for a violation of the NCAA’s rules for accepting money. “Young said he took out a loan from a family friend to fly his girlfriend out to the Buckeyes' 2019 Rose Bowl Game against Washington” (Sporting News 1). This is against their terms and now the NCAA is seeking action through the punishment of Young.

Depending on the amount of the loan, the NCAA will determine his suspension but it is most likely going to be four games in length. This suspension has now made his odds to win the Heisman Trophy 100/1. If the suspension does happen to be four games, the Ohio State Buckeyes will be without their star defensive end in their first round playoff game.

Personally I believe the NCAA is in the wrong for suspending Young. Yes, he broke the rules but the rule that was broken is absurd. These big name athletes bring in millions of dollars and consumers to the school and they can’t even receive the tiniest bit of money? It is believed the amount Young was loaned wasn’t that grand and that he has paid it back to the family member who leant the loan in the first place.

The Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James was interviewed about the situation and he had the same opinion as many: "The fact Chase Young even had to borrow money from a family member just so his girlfriend could come see him play in one of the biggest games of his life should tell you all you need to know… and since y’all always wanna know more he paid it back to his family member” (247 Sports 1).

Maybe Young didn’t have the money to fly his girlfriend out at the time, or maybe he doesn’t have the money to afford it at all, so he shouldn’t be punished for accepting a loan from a family member.

The NCAA needs to have a change of rules in the near future so more kids don’t get punished for these type of things. Chase Young was robbed out of his chance to win the Heisman Trophy and nothing will be done about it. The suspension will be upheld and there’s a chance he’ll miss out on the playoffs all because of one inconvenience that meant no harm.
