Six Year Old Hero

Jan. 19, 2020 a fire started in the kitchen of a Avenea, New Jersey home deeming it uninhabitable. The family's six year old daughter Madalyn Karlbon heard the fire alarm at about 2:17 am and went to try to wake her mother who was asleep on the couch. When failing to rouse her she ran to her father who was sleeping in the bed room "I remember my daughter screaming, 'Daddy, the house is on fire, the house is on fire,'" volunteer firefighter and ex-Avenel fire Chief Jimmy Karlbon told ABC affiliate KABC. Mr.Karlbon then got his daughter and two-year-old son Hunter out of the house. Then he went back in for his girlfriend Sarah Woods. The house was deemed uninhabitable and the family are currently living in a motel and are accepting donations to The Avenel Fire Company Community Fund, 346 Avenel St., Avenel, NJ 07001 according to a Patch.com article

Madalyn had learned about fire safety at her school a few months prior, which prepared her on how to act in a dangerous situation as well as get her family out safely. This shows that learning and teaching children about safety and how to act in a fire is important. It can literally save lives.

No matter how young you are you can still be a hero. Children need to know how to act in dangerous situations so that they can still be safe and help. Parents should show their children multiple ways to get out of their house and even their bedrooms.
