Spirit Week

Updated: Oct 29, 2019

The week of October 21- October 25 was Kent County High School’s homecoming spirit week.

On Monday, students were encouraged to wear the jersey of their favorite football, basketball, baseball, or hockey team. On Tuesday, students dressed up as vsco girls. Vsco girls are popular on the app Tik Tok, where people post videos often portraying different characters.

Students wore their comfiest sweaters and sweatpants on Wednesday for lazy day. On Thursday, students showed their American pride by wearing red, white, and blue. Finally, on the day of the homecoming pep rally and football game, students were asked to wear all of their blue and gold on Friday.

There was not much spirit shown by the students this year. Senior Cynthia Faber said,“Personally I think that the spirit days were alright, but I feel like we haven't had as much participation as we have in the previous years.”

A big part of the lack of participation is because of the controversy over the spirit week days. Many students were greatly disappointed when “yeehaw” day did not make the cut and lazy day did.

“It should have been yeehaw day because kids dress lazy usually and they put a ban on pajamas, so there was no spirit in that day and no effort,” senior Brendan McColigan said. “I also would want to do a jock versus nerd day because I feel like many kids would participate and it's not as controversial as kids make it seem.”

However, some disagree with the statement of whether or not some of these days could be debatable.

“Jock vs nerd day specifically assumes a level of violence that's unnecessary,” Mrs. McCown said.

Because of actions portrayed by students in the past, there are many restrictions on spirit week. Students are not allowed to dress for disco day, jock versus nerd day, or gender bender day.

Despite these restrictions, vsco day—which is allowed— was like a gender bender day under a different name. Many male students mocked vsco girls by wearing long shirts, short shorts, and scrunchies. Problems did not occur throughout the day and many people found the outfits amusing.

Kent County students are capable of dressing up for spirit week without offending their peers. In the end, the students are simply wanting to show spirit.
