Students are Proud to be an American

On Friday, Nov. 7, Kent County High School students and staff were called to the auditorium for an assembly. The assembly was the school’s first annual Veterans Day program and, according to Jordyn Cox-Pemberton, “It was a nice way to honor veterans”.

Freshman Jade Lee thought the assembly was eye opening. Jade said “I didn’t know there is that many veterans in Kent County.” Jade’s father was in the Navy himself and she is proud of her family’s involvement in the military.

Junior Jordyn Cox-Pemberton and seniors Brendan McColigan and Brianna Pinder spoke during the assembly on Friday. Telling students and staff about Veterans Day and what it means to be patriotic. Parts of their speeches were personal memories of veterans in their own families.

They were not the only students who contributed to the program. The KCHS band members played three separate songs and junior KT Pagano sang “America the Beautiful” by Samuel A. Ward.

Students were encouraged to bring in their family members if they are veterans. The veterans were then asked to speak and they did not disappoint. Some gave advice, some made a few jokes, and some had memories to share. All of the veterans were grateful to be acknowledged in such a nice way. Air Force veteran Art Ramirez says “It was very nice. You guys (the students) did a great job.” Students at KCHS seemed to truly enjoy the program and it will now be our annual program.
