The Lions Maul the Trojans 64-26

On Dec. 10, Kent County’s and Queen Anne’s County boys and girls basketball teams faced off for the first time of the season. With these schools having a big rivalry between each other, there was a lot of tension and expectation building up to the game.

With the Kent girls varsity coming off a hot start with a 63-19 win over Mardela, they were looking to keep the win streak alive by defeating Queen Anne’s County, the defending state champions. Sadly the girls fell to QA 67-47, however they did not hang their heads because it was a way closer game compared to the 72-19 loss the year prior. With the new senior transfer from Chrisfield Kayla Collins scoring ten points, she is now at a career total of 998. Kayla is projected to score her 1000th career point on Dec. 12 against North Caroline. The Kent girls look to keep winning more games as the team feels their talent has drastically increased from the 2017-2018 season.

The Kent boys varsity started off their season with a good win, beating Mardela 69-50 at home. Number one ranked player on the Bayside Jayshaun Freeman finished the game with 22 points while only playing two quarters due to an injury. Last season Kent and Queen Anne’s tied the season with a 1-1 record against each other, each winning on their opposing rivals court. With Freeman expected to play, and a lot of new additions to the roster from the 2017-2018 season, the expectations for this game were high. However Freeman was held scoreless, leaving shortly after the first quarter due to another injury and was taken to the hospital at halftime.

Kent County fell to Queen Anne’s with an unexpected score of 64-26. Leaving the players of the team and fans of Kent County embarrassed, The boys look to bounce back against North Caroline on Dec. 12. In spite of the drastic blowout loss, Kent County did see some shine in a few players. One particularly being senior Ryan Argo, who scored 9 of the final 11 points after being down 55-15. Ryan Argo is a talented player that should hopefully be seeing more playing time after showing off his talent against a competitive rival.

Jayshaun Freeman is expected to miss three weeks due to the injury he suffered. Without his impressive talent for the next few games, other players are going to have to step up and help the team get big wins early on in the season.
